Why Are They Great?
You have been taught what to say. Nobody taught you how to make someone feel it. That gap — between correct English and powerful English — is exactly what this series is about.

One important note before we begin: this passage is widely — and wrongly — attributed to Nelson Mandela's 1994 inauguration speech. Mandela never said these words. But the mistake tells you something extraordinary. This passage carries so much moral authority that the world gave it to its greatest statesman. That is the power of language done right.
The Transcript
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

The HartGrove Framework — Applied
It opens with a declaration — calm, direct, and slightly counter-intuitive. "Our deepest fear... it's not that we are inadequate."
There is no dramatic whisper. No shock tactic. No question. Just quiet authority — like a mentor gently correcting a misconception you didn't know you had. The listener leans in because the voice does not demand it.
A deliberate mix — mostly medium-to-long sentences, broken by short punchy ones at exactly the right moment.
- Short & powerful: "Actually, who are you not to be?"
- Long & flowing: "There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you."
The long sentences build the thought. The short ones land it. This rhythm creates natural breathing points — and in spoken English, breath is emphasis.
The speaker uses generous, strategic pauses — often 1 to 3 seconds. Not hesitation. Intention.
- After big ideas: "Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure." [pause] — let it settle.
- Before rhetorical questions: "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous...?" [pause] — make the listener ask it of themselves.
- After the pivot: "Actually, who are you not to be?" [pause] — pure gold. The silence is the answer.
The pause turns a speech into a meditation. It signals: I am not in a hurry. And neither are you.
- Starts low, steady, and intimate — like a private conversation.
- Rises on positive, expansive words: brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous, glory.
- Slows dramatically on the most important lines — to give them weight.
- Speeds up slightly on explanatory passages — then slows again for impact.
- Ends on a warm, uplifting tone with gentle forward momentum.
The voice is doing everything the words are doing — but in sound, not meaning.
Start: Quiet, thoughtful, almost corrective — addressing a fear the listener didn't know they were carrying.
Middle: Builds into empowerment, warmth, and mild challenge.
End: Liberated, expansive, quietly triumphant.
The listener arrives somewhere different from where they started. That movement — that is what makes a speech great.
- "Our deepest fear" — the framing device. Returns like a refrain.
- "We / us / our" — creates shared experience. Nobody is alone in this.
- "Light" — the central metaphor, repeated until it glows.
The repetition makes it feel like a gentle sermon or poem — reassuring, not preachy. It hammers the idea without raising its voice.
The word "Actually" does everything here. It is a beautiful, almost playful rebuke to the listener's self-doubt. Intimate. Slightly sassy. Deeply freeing.
And the pause that follows it — that silence — is where the listener answers. Their answer is yours. That is mastery.
The speaker never says:
- "Don't be afraid."
- "You are enough."
- Any specific advice. Any steps. Any instructions.
What is left in the silence: personal responsibility. The speech implies everything but spells out nothing. It trusts the listener to feel the implication — and act on it. That trust is itself a form of respect.
Not an explosion. A soft, resonant landing — like a door closing quietly on a room you will think about for days.
It ends on ripple-effect hope. You are not just doing this for yourself. You are doing it for everyone watching you. That is the final gift of the speech — and it lands gently, so the listener carries it, rather than discards it.
Directly to you — one person — while addressing everyone. It feels intimate, like a loving mentor speaking to you alone, yet universal enough for a stadium.
This is the hardest thing to achieve in spoken English: making a crowd feel like a conversation. Listen carefully to how it is done.
Coherence and cohesion — outstanding. The speaker has excellent logical flow, natural linking of ideas, and varied sentence structures throughout.
Fluency is confident and expressive — not rushed, not hesitant. The pauses read as control, not uncertainty.
Vocabulary is precise and evocative: "manifest the glory," "playing small," "liberated from our own fear." These are not textbook phrases. They are chosen with intention.
Pronunciation is clear, warm, and intelligible. The examiner is focused entirely on the ideas — which means the delivery is doing its job.
For a Band 5.5 student: this recording is your target. Not the words — the architecture. The pause. The pace. The warmth.
Strategic Pausing + The "Actually" Pivot
Make a bold statement. Follow it with a short, personal, slightly surprising counter-question. Then pause — and let the silence be the answer. Any speaker can use this immediately. The pause costs nothing. The effect is everything.
Choose any opinion you hold. State it. Then immediately challenge it with a question beginning with "Actually..." Then pause for three full seconds.
Topic: "Is it important to speak perfect English?"
Try: "Most students believe that perfect grammar is the goal. Actually — who decided grammar was the goal?" [pause]
Record yourself. Listen back. Notice what the pause does to the weight of the question. That is your lesson for this week.
