You already know: a noun is a thing, person, or place. Now let's look more closely.
A
The big bell rings at six o'clock. Anh opens his eyes slowly. He has slept well on his simple wooden bed. For a moment he does not know where he is. Then he hears the sound of birds outside and the soft wind moving through the tall trees. He remembers. He is at the monastery. He sits up, puts his feet on the cold stone floor, and breathes deeply. This is his first full day.
B
He can smell something warm coming from far away. He follows the smell down the long stone corridor. On each side of the corridor there are small windows. Through the windows he can see the garden — green and quiet in the early morning light. At the end of the corridor there is a large wooden door. He pushes it open.
C
Inside is the dining hall. It is a large, bright room with long wooden tables and simple chairs. Six monks are already sitting quietly. Nobody speaks. The only sound is the soft clinking of bowls and chopsticks. Anh stands at the door and does not know what to do.
D
Then an old monk looks up and smiles. He says softly, "Come in. My name is Brother Minh. Sit here." He points to an empty chair beside a young monk. The young monk looks at Anh and says quietly, "Hello. I am Brother Toan. Do not worry. You will learn our ways."
E
On the table in front of Anh there is a small bowl of rice, a cup of warm soup, a few pieces of vegetable, and a cup of hot green tea. The food is very simple. But after the long journey to the mountains, it smells like the best thing in the world. Anh picks up his chopsticks slowly and carefully, and he begins to eat. Nobody rushes. Nobody speaks. There is only the food, the morning, and the quiet.
F
When Anh finishes, he puts down his chopsticks and sits still for a moment. Brother Toan leans over and says in a low voice, "Here, we do not eat to finish. We eat to taste." Anh does not fully understand the words. But he feels something new — a kind of peace he has never felt before. He looks at the empty bowl in his hands and nods slowly.
