A
After they finish sweeping, Toan and Anh sit under the large tree. Toan begins to talk. "Every day here is the same," he says. "The bell rings at six. We wash and dress. Then we go to the quiet breakfast." He counts on his long fingers. "After that — tasks. We sweep, carry water, cut wood, and clean the long stone corridors. Then two hours of study with Minh. Then a silent lunch. Then one hour of free time. Then more tasks. Then dinner. Then sleep at nine."
B
Anh blinks. "Free time?" he says. "What do you do?" Toan smiles his wide smile. "I walk to the top of the hill," he says. "You can see very far from there — the green fields, the river, the small villages far below. It is wonderful." He pauses. "I also draw. Plants, birds, things I find in the garden." He reaches into his robe and pulls out a small, thin notebook.
C
The notebook is old and soft. Anh opens it carefully. The pages are full of small drawings — a tall tree, a round stone, a bird with wide wings, a bowl of soup. The lines are simple but the drawings are clear. "These are good," says Anh. He sounds surprised. Toan shakes his head. "I am not a good artist," he says. "But I practise every day. Every day I get a little better." He closes the notebook. "That is the only way."
D
"What about you?" asks Toan. "What do you like to do?" Anh thinks for a moment. At home, he liked to read — to sit near the window with a book for a long time and go very far away inside his head. He also liked to cook. Every Sunday, he made soup with his grandmother in her small, warm kitchen. And sometimes, when he felt sad or worried, he walked by the river alone and thought about things. "I like to read," he says at last. "And to walk." A long pause. "I have never tried to draw."
E
"And here?" says Toan. "What do you like so far — here at the monastery?" Anh looks at the clean path, the flat stones, the tall, still trees. He is quiet for a long time. "I like sweeping," he says at last. "I did not think I would. But when I sweep, my mind is still. I like that feeling." Toan looks at him with his calm, sleepy eyes. "You are a natural," he says. "Most new students hate it."
F
The bell rings — low and clear. Toan stands and stretches his long, thin arms above his head. "Tomorrow," he says, "in free time — I will teach you to draw." Anh looks up. "Why?" Toan grins his wide grin. "Because everyone here needs one thing to do with their hands when their mind is quiet. Sweeping is good. Drawing is better." He picks up his broom and walks away. Anh sits under the tree for one more moment. He looks at his hands. He thinks about tomorrow.
