The Garden

Chapter 3 of Anh's story — read again carefully

A After breakfast, Toan takes Anh outside. They walk through a low, narrow door and into the garden. Anh stops and looks. The garden is not big. But it is very beautiful. There are tall trees, green plants, and a long, thin path made of flat, grey stones.
B At the end of the path there is an old wall. The wall is made of dark stone. On the wall there is a small, wooden sign. The sign says: "Be still. Be here." Anh reads the words slowly. He does not fully understand them. But he feels something quiet inside him.
C Toan points to a large tree near the wall. "Every morning," he says, "we sit under this tree. We sit still. We breathe. We listen." He points to a round, flat stone under the tree. "This is your stone," he says. "Anh's stone." Anh looks at the cold, grey stone. It is small — but it feels important.
D Near the tree there is a wooden rack with tools. There is a heavy bucket, a long, wooden rake, a soft broom, and a broken pot in the corner. "We use these every day," says Toan. "The garden needs our hands. And we need the garden."
E Toan gives Anh the soft broom. "Sweep the path," he says. "Slowly. Do not rush." Anh begins to sweep. The dry leaves move across the flat stones. The sound is very soft. Anh sweeps slowly and carefully. For the first time since he arrived, his mind feels quiet.
F After some time, Toan says, "Good. Now look at the path." Anh looks. The flat stones are clean now. The dry leaves are in a small pile. Toan nods. "The garden teaches us," he says. "One small thing at a time." Anh looks at the clean path and smiles — for the first time since he arrived at the monastery.
