You know: nouns (things, people, places), proper nouns (special names with a capital letter), and adjectives (words that describe nouns). Now let's use all three — and something new happens in the garden.
A
One quiet afternoon, Toan has an idea. "Let us draw each other," he says. "It will be good practice." Anh looks up from his broom. "Draw?" he says. "I cannot draw." Toan grins. He has a wide, cheerful grin that makes his round face look even rounder. "Nobody can draw," he says. "That is what makes it fun."
B
They sit on the flat stones under the large tree, each with a small pencil and a piece of rough paper. Toan is thirteen — one year older than Anh. He is tall and thin, with short, dark hair and bright brown eyes that always seem to be laughing. His ears are a little big for his head. He knows this. It does not bother him at all.
C
Anh is small and quiet — thin, with long, straight black hair that falls over one eye. His face is serious, but when he smiles — which is not often — it is a very good smile. Right now, his face is serious. He is trying very hard to draw Toan's big ears.
D
After ten minutes, they show each other their drawings. Toan's drawing of Anh looks like a sad potato with hair. Anh's drawing of Toan looks like a happy rabbit. They stare at the drawings. Then Toan says, very seriously: "I think you have my ears correct." Anh laughs — a real, loud laugh — for the first time since he arrived. It surprises them both.
E
Then — disaster. Anh's small pencil rolls off the stone and disappears into the thick, dark undergrowth at the base of the old wall. "No!" says Anh. It is his only pencil. He gets down on his hands and knees and pushes through the green, tangled plants. His fingers search the cold, damp ground.
F
His fingers touch something hard — but it is not the pencil. He pushes the plants aside. There, set into the ancient wall, is a small, wooden door. It is very low — a person must bend to go through. There is no handle. No sign. Only a small, round hole where a lock once was. "Toan," says Anh, very quietly. "Come and look at this."
G
Toan kneels beside him. His bright eyes go wide. For once, he does not smile. "I have been here for two years," he says. "I did not know this door was here." The wooden planks are dark with age. There is green moss on the lower part. Toan puts his hand flat on the surface and pushes gentlely. The door does not move. "We must tell Minh," he says. Then — almost as an afterthought — "Did you find your pencil?" Anh looks down. "No," he says. They both start to laugh again, even though they are not sure why.
